Note générale

Summary: Papers include organizational documentation from the early days of the Oregon Wine Industry prior to the establishment of the Oregon Wine Board. There is a significant amount of documentation regarding climate and weather patterns for the Willamette Valley, as well as documentation dealing with challenges facing viticulture.

Note générale

Biographical Note: Gary Fuqua is one of the rare native Oregonians to plant a vineyard in the Willamette Valley. Gary attended Cleveland High School and married Saundra Fuqua. They had three children: Jason, Paige and Eric. Gary worked as an economist for the Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle and Washington, D.C. In 1971, he moved back to Oregon with his family and purchased 35 acres in the Red Hills of Dundee. Fuqua Vineyards was established in 1974 and sold its first harvest to Dick Erath; throughout its existence, Fuqua Vineyards would sell the bulk of its grapes to Erath. Gary would retain enough grapes to produce a small amount of wine in the basement of his home.

Gary took a few classes at UC Davis and prepared a couple papers on the economics of starting a vineyard as well as the adaptability of wine grapes to the Willamette Valley climate. Gary served as the chairman of the finance and land use committees for the Wine Grower’s Council of Oregon (now known as the Oregon Wine Board). Gary sold 10 acres of Fuqua Vineyards to Alan and Sally Holstein in 1980 and he sold the remaining 25 acres of the vineyard acreage to Archery Summit in 1993.
