Algemene aantekening
Summary: The Sokol Blosser Winery was established more than 40 years ago as one of the earliest wineries in the Dundee Hills. Founders Susan Sokol Blosser and Bill Blosser first produced wine in the late 1970s. Susan Sokol Blosser became the president of the winery in 1991 and was among the pioneers in sustainable winemaking practices and also helped found the ¡Salud! health care program. The collection contains business and vineyard records as well as historical winery and family records.
Algemene aantekening
Historical Note: Susan and Bill Sokol Blosser bought their first land in 1970, an abandoned prune orchard 30 miles south of Portland. In 1971, they cleared the land and planted their first vines. The winery was completed in 1977, in time to produce their first house vintage. In 1980, the vineyard increased to 72 acres, and Bill became the full-time president of operations, with Susan taking over as vineyard manager. In this role, Susan experimented with covercrop as a means to reduce erosion on hillside vineyards, for which she received an award from the U.S. Soil and Water Conservation District.
In 1991, Susan became the president of the vineyard. In 1996, Sokol Blosser Vineyards became the first vineyard to be certified “Salmon-Safe.” The next year, the vineyards joined LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology), and in 2002 Sokol Blosser began a shift to becoming organic, and their barrel cellar received LEED certification. The second generation, Alex and Allison Sokol Blosser, became co-presidents in 2008.
